For the better part of the last two decades, dental implants have been used to restore a single tooth. If you’re missing multiple teeth in one location of your mouth, and you’re not satisfied with the temporary result of a partial denture, your dentist, Dr. Lori Hawkins, can use dental implants to securely mount a dental bridge.

Dr. Lori Hawkins needs to examine your mouth and take a series of X-rays. This will help her assess the overall health of your mouth and determine the amount of jaw structure you have available. If the tooth loss also resulted in the loss of bone structure in the area, you might need to have a bone graft installed to restore sufficient structure to mount the needed implants.

After any bone structure issues have been addressed, the process of implanting two abutments for your bridge can begin. To do this, Dr. Lori Hawkins will refer you to a local oral surgeon. The implant can be installed in a single outpatient appointment. Most people choose to be deeply sedated while the implant is installed, so you will need to arrange to have someone drive you home afterward.

To install the implants, two small incisions will be made in your gums to gain direct access to the bone. Then, two narrow channels in the bone will be made before two titanium abutments will be screwed into place. Titanium is known to be biologically safe and will eventually fuse to your bones to provide your final bridge with a strong anchor.

Your gums will be sutured closed and each abutment will be protected under a temporary crown while they fuse to the bone. Once everything has healed, Dr. Lori Hawkins can install a custom-made bridge.
