If your child has hit their tooth, then it’s important to properly handle the situation and care for your child’s smile. The way you do these things can affect the restoration of the smile. Our dentist, Dr. Hawkins, is happy to help you help your child by encouraging you to do these things in the following situations:

-When your child knocks a tooth loose: Call our office to see how to proceed. We might recommend a dental X-ray to make sure everything is in tip-top shape. If everything is OK, you will just need to give your child a soft-foods diet for a few days to allow the tooth to secure itself back into the jawbone.

-When your child knocks a baby tooth out: There is no cause for alarm. Although the missing tooth will impair the speech and chewing a bit, it won’t cause any long-term damage. The permanent tooth will replace the missing tooth soon enough.

-When your child knocks a permanent tooth out: It’s very important to call our office and schedule an emergency appointment. Retrieve the tooth by holding it by the crown. Wash it gently with water—do not scrub it! Keep the tooth moist by keeping it in a cup of milk or saltwater. Bring the tooth with you to the appointment.
